Now quicker and easier to find the right job in local government

04 December 2006

It’s now quicker and easier to find jobs in New South Wales local government.

A new feature on the Local Government and Shires Associations of NSW website allows job seekers to search for local government jobs without having to wade through other industry and sector positions.

An initiative of the Associations’ with MyCareer.com.au, the feature is live from today at www.lgsa.org.au/JobSearch

President of the Local Government Association, Cr Genia McCaffery, said it’s an exciting development.

“There are currently hundreds of jobs available in local government in NSW and 50,000 people are employed by the sector. This feature will make it quicker and easier for job seekers to find the right job or career for them,” Cr McCaffery said.

“An ongoing chance to contribute to your community; career development opportunities; flexible working conditions; varied salary packages and the possibility of working in any town or city in the state are just some of the benefits of working for a council.”

General Manager of MyCareer Lisa Watts added that councils need skilled workers.

"We're very pleased to be launching this new centralised online job hub together with the LGSA NSW today," said Lisa Watts.

"Like most sectors in NSW and Australia, the local government sector is currently facing a skills shortage and this affects the way we all recruit new staff. We're really pleased to assist the Associations’ in providing jobseekers with a website focussed on making local government job searching easier. Hopefully in turn, this will mean councils and shires throughout NSW will attract even more high quality candidates to work in their municipalities.”

The site will make the job search process easier by offering Job Alerts and RSS job feeds so job seekers can be notified every hour or every day of new local government positions being posted. Job seekers can search by region, profession or both.

“Job seekers who use our site to search for local government jobs will have the added bonus of direct access to general information on local government, training opportunities and current issues relevant to the sector,” President of the Shires Association of NSW, Cr Col Sullivan OAM said.

“Working for a council is fulfilling because residents use the services and infrastructure provided by them every day.  It’s also an exciting time to be working in local government because we’re pushing for a fairer share of resources to be able to provide for our communities.”
