Q: I am 61 years old and recently retired from a job I have worked at for more than 40 years. I am fit and relatively healthy and enjoy keeping busy.
I'm fortunate in that I have retired with a reasonable superannuation fund to look after me but I wouldn't mind still doing some form of income-earning work.
Several years ago I became interested in woodturning as a hobby. I enjoy the work and I wonder if it is something I could, or should, consider turning into a retirement job, that might even provide a source of income to at least help to pay the bills?
A: If you haven't already done so, find out where your nearest woodturning community group is located. You will find people with the same interests, passion and skills for woodturning that you have. You will find you will learn more about your craft through meeting fellow woodturners and you will also find leads to how and where you can present and sell your work.
There are quality weekend craft markets operating regularly in cities and major towns. I know of people who have sold hobby goods at craft markets, including everything from handmade soaps to timber toys, garden furniture, woodturned bowls and lamp stands, candles and paintings.
Enjoy your working retirement.
