NET11 The Internet - Communications
Develop your skills and understanding of the internet at an advanced level, through practical exercises and a parallel investigation of the concepts that underpin the way the internet functions as an information and communication system. The unit includes consideration of email, chat, newsgroups and other communications sources such as blogging, websites, file sharing and information management.

You will explore the complicated structure of governance of the internet. Gain a detailed insight into the current discussions and advances in internet development. You will explore current issues, in response to events and issues at the time of the unit running. The unit will involve discussion of how issues become current and how to gain access to information on them. You will develop skills in sourcing and analysing information. The unit has an emphasis on student leadership in determining and tracking issues for debate and discussion.

This project unit, taken before or with NET39, enables you to undertake guided, independent research and writing on a specific topic relating to the internet. As the internet is a fast moving phenomenon, we use this unit to enable you to study important topics that arise too quickly to take a formal place in a predetermined unit. This unit is linked to NET39. You must study these units sequentially and you will receive one grade after successfully completing both units.

This project unit, taken with or after NET38, enables you to undertake guided, independent research and writing (or other activities by agreement) on a specific topic relating to the internet. Usually you would be expected to produce a 5,000 word essay to complete this unit. However, alternative modes of assessment and outcomes may be approved. As the internet is a fast moving phenomenon, we use this unit to enable you to study important topics that arise too quickly to take a formal place in a predetermined unit. You must complete NET38 to receive a result for this unit.

Begin the process of becoming a web designer. This unit will ensure you have a basic understanding and the ability to produce useable and effective internet resources as part of a team with other design professionals. It also prepares you for additional units which will extend your internet design skills. The unit provides an overview and a basis for further design units. Key issues covered include: A historical look at web publishing; User considerations; Extensible Hypertext Markup Language (XHTML); Cascading Style Sheets (CSS); Typography; Bitmapped graphics; Designing for navigation and Online audio/visual media delivery.

This unit builds on the skills developed in NED11 and helps you refine your web design techniques, with a more detailed look at graphic design and interactive screen design. You will develop online multimedia, keeping in mind the limited bandwidth and download time of end users. Topics include: Introduction to Flash; Colour theory; Interactive screen design; Storyboarding; Interface design; Navigation and flowcharts; Project management; Animation; Copyright and referencing and Search engine optimisation.

The World Wide Web is fast becoming a dynamic information medium and advanced web designers are capable of harnessing the potential of this situation. In essence, web designers are able to deliver the information required tailored to the client's needs. Web designers with dynamic publishing knowledge can create easily updatable websites with boilerplate designs and data insertion. This unit develops your skills and abilities in these areas, which is particularly important for e-commerce.

Explore ways of making websites more engaging through effective interactivity design including interactive animation and other multimedia approaches. This unit explores emerging technologies for even greater levels of visual and information interactivity, as well as learning about designing educational websites. You will examine learning styles, navigation for learning sites, instructional design issues, interactivity design, designing for motivation and designing help features. You will embark on an internet design project that you will complete in the following unit (NED36).

Complete the internet design study you commenced in previous units through the production of a project-based website design, its development and implementation. This process is supported by regular usability testing and/or peer and facilitator reviews of your project. In addition, the unit may involve your analysis of other student projects as they progress, drawing significant reflection of your own projects from this analysis. Key issues include research, skills development, conceptual development and execution.
