This unit examines the nature of leadership in health care domains. Attention is directed to analysing leadership and health care policy within the health care policy context, engaging health care leaders in the development of leadership skills.

HIM103 Organisation of the Australian Health System

Provides a systems approach to examining the Australian health system, comparing it with systems in other developed countries. Explores the design, development and evaluation of Australian health policy with issues such as power, professionalism, equity and the social determinants of health.Regulation, governance, policy and funding. The health care of specific groups including indigenous, rural, and mental health and aged care is examined. It discusses the delivery of health care, medical services, primary care and community health services. It concludes with a critical discussion of Challenges facing the Australian health system and future trends in the Australian health system.

HIM104 Quality and Performance Management

The unit covers the historical, political and social factors impacting on quality measurement in health care; health care quality monitoring and statistical quality measurement; monitoring techniques and health care quality data; principles of performance indicator programs, adverse event monitoring, satisfaction surveys and benchmarking; relationship between evidence based medicine, clinical practice guidelines and quality improvement; design, implementation and evaluation of quality improvement programs.

HIM107 Ethics and Health Care Leadership

This Unit provides students with an opportunity to examine and reflect critically on the nature and implications of leadership ethics in health care domains. Specific attention is given to examining the key characteristics of ethical leadership, and the theoretical underpinnings of sound moral decision making and moral action in health care leadership domains. Attention is also given to processes for identifying and cultivating health care leaders who are personally and professionally committed to fostering organisational ethics within health care institutions and systems.

HIM102 Legal and Regulatory Framework

Provides an understanding of law as it relates to health administration, health service professions and health service deliveries. Students will address issues such as law and legislation, legislative controls governing health practice and common law regulations.

HIM105 Introduction to Health Informatics

An introductory unit in Health Informatics to introduce professionals to key principles concerning the management of health information and new technologies. It covers key concepts and outlines of contemporary issues in areas such as web technology, Telehealth, Electronic Health Records, data standards, e-commerce/e-health, decision support systems, artificial intelligence, security, confidentiality and privacy.

A work-based project which is developed in conjunction with a university supervisor. Students will examine the following topics - Ethics Committee Approval; Research and Writing of Thesis; Submission of Thesis for Examination; Graduation and Thesis Preparation.

INH110 International Health and Primary Health Care

This unit provides an understanding and knowledge of key issues in international health that will be especially helpful to individuals currently working, or contemplating to do so, in the developing world and disadvantaged communities in the developed world. It provides a thorough grounding of the social, economic, and political forces that determine the health status of the people. It discusses the characteristics and scope of primary health care with particular relevance to program policy, planning and evaluation of major diseases in both developing and developed countries. The unit introduces current developments in social science, epidemiological and biomedical approaches to primary health care.

An overview of health promotion including - foundations of health promotion, rationale for health promotion, needs assessments, evaluation, psychosocial theory, planning and implementing health promotion interventions, community development and community participation, social capital, capacity building, sustainability and the application of theoretical and empirical evidence.
