EDF5421 Professional Issues 1: A Focus on the Classroom

This unit introduces students to the climate of classrooms in secondary schools. Students will consider the design of teaching and learning experiences, management of classrooms, the introduction of strategies and technologies into the teaching and learning context, and the impact of these considerations on curriculum. Students will be asked to explore the relationships between educational theory and classroom practice.

EDF5422 Communication, Learning and Assessment

Develop your awareness of communication skills, including literacy skills, in traditional forms and in the use of learning technologies in today's classrooms. You will explore different learning styles, the way in which learning takes place, its relationship to teaching and specifically, teaching adolescents. A major consideration in this unit is teaching and communicating with adolescents and the development of curriculum and assessment that meets the needs of multiple groups within the educational community.

EDF5423 Educational Contexts

This unit is designed to introduce students to the educational contexts in which teaching and learning occur. Students will consider the social and cultural contexts that influence education at the local, national and international level. Students will use a range of sociological frameworks to explore educational contexts. This will include a consideration of a range of educational policies in various settings. It is intended that students will acquire a broad-based understanding of the diverse nature and practice of teachers' work.

Gain an introduction to the working life of the professional teacher. It is important to focus on the profession of teaching. This unit will help you identify professional practice particularly in terms of accountability and ethical practices as well as provide you with mechanisms for documenting their professional practice. It is important to prepare new professionals to become active members of their educational community.

EDF5462 Biology Education A

This unit prepares students to teach Biology in secondary schools both as a specialist VCE (years 11&12) unit and within the general science curriculum (years 7 -10). The teaching approach in this unit focuses on the development of conceptual understanding in biology through the selection of learning experiences and contexts that take into account the interests, knowledge, understanding, abilities and experiences of learners. Students will be expected to develop the ability to evaluate and reflect on the adequacy of their own understanding of biology concepts and as a result to make informed decisions about teaching approaches which can effectively promote desired learning outcomes.

This unit is an introduction to the relationships between learning and teaching in chemistry. Teaching strategies and contexts for use in chemistry classes in Years 7 to 12 will be explored. Methods for assessing and monitoring student learning in chemistry will be introduced. The relationship between science, technology and society will be a focus. Students studying on-campus will participate in a camp in March.

EDF5436 English Education A

This is the first unit in a sequence of two units which will develop student capabilities in developing appropriate curriculum and pedagogy in the area of English curriculum. Students are introduced to an account of the development of English curriculum in secondary education. Through an examination of the national policy and various State-based curricula, students are familiarised with current developments in English literacy education. As a precursor to school placement for practice teaching, students will be provided with opportunities to begin to develop skills in lesson planning, curriculum planning, teaching strategies and procedures.

This unit builds directly upon the content and experiences of EDF5436 English Education A. This unit is designed to further assist students to develop abilities and skills in planning and implementing curriculum in the area of English curriculum. While the unit focuses mainly on the junior and middle secondary school, reference will be made to the Victorian Certificate of Education and other examples of curriculum in the post-compulsory years.

This unit is an introduction to the contribution of geography to the education of secondary students both as a separate discipline and as an element of a more integrated curriculum. Studies include ways of approaching teaching, learning and assessment in geography and how to access a range of resources and technologies.

This unit builds on the concepts introduced in EDF5440. Studies will further approaches to teaching and learning in geography and ways of assessing students' understanding of geographical knowledge and skills. EDF5490 Health Education A

This unit introduces students to a holistic approach to health education, exploring interrelationships between the physical, mental, social and environmental domains. Students will be given the opportunity to develop health skills and knowledge through exploring the profession within the context of local and global environments, its theoretical backgrounds and practical application. The unit will examine the relationship between health education and health promotion drawing from different policy, economic, social and organizational perspectives. In particular concepts of behavioural change will be explored and related to specific and contemporary health issues.

EDF5491 Health Education B

This unit will consider application of theories associated with behavior change through exploring case study profiles for various health issues. Students will be asked to reflect critically on major international health issues as well as those that may be unique to a particular group, culture, individual or environment. The unit will continue to look at the responsibilities and competencies expected of health agencies and educators together with the role they play within school and community settings. The unit also explores how different environments can address health issues and become health promoting.

This unit introduces the teaching and learning of History as a discipline as well as SOSE/Humanities strand. Topics include why teach and learn History; lesson-planning; teaching by the textbook; teacher-directed questioning; SOSE/Social Education and Civics and Citizenship Education/Values Education curriculum perspectives, focuses, conceptual areas of knowledge, as well as values, attitudes, behaviours in the SOSE Profile and Statement, Social Education, VELS and CCE/VE documents; reading and writing history; preparing for a school placement ('learning new histories' and classroom management); inquiry methodology; and, meeting the needs of all students through Gardners multiple intelligences, Blooms taxonomy and de Bonos six thinking hats.

Topics introduce further teaching, learning and assessment strategies, unit-planning, using a variety of primary and secondary sources, incorporating the theories of Bloom, Gardner and de Bono, teaching VCE histories, and responding to state and national curriculum priorities in the teaching of history, SOSE or Humanities.

EDF5456 Information Technology/Computing Education A

The unit will be based on a number of broad objectives which will enable successful students to understand the scope of Information Technology education including the issues of technology facilitated learning. It will further develop students' knowledge of the methods and teaching styles appropriate for information technology learning at all levels of secondary education. Students will gain familiarity with the resources and facilities available to the information technology teacher, and gain experience with the different ways in which information technology can be structured in schools.

In this unit students will be introduced to a range of issues associated with being a secondary mathematics teacher. Issues examined include: how children learn mathematics; contemporary mathematics curricula; theories informing the approaches to mathematics teaching advocated; planning to teach mathematics; and locating resources. A range of content areas within the curriculum are the avenue through which the issues are examined.

This unit builds on the concepts introduced in EDF5454. The focus is on: developing skills to teach sequences of mathematics lessons, using contexts and applications for mathematics teaching, assessing student learning, catering for individual differences, developing awareness of contextual, social, and cultural factors that can impinge on students' mathematics learning, and professional responsibilities.

EDF5476 Media Studies Education A

This unit will provide an introduction to teaching and preparation strategies necessary for the secondary teacher of media studies. Students taking this unit will investigate contemporary issues in the media, such as representation, narrative and social values in the media forms of film, television, print media, radio and electronic information systems. Students will draw upon their knowledge of these issues to design and implement lessons suitable for a range of levels in the secondary school.

This unit extends the study of teaching strategies and media issues introduced in EDF5476. Students will be required to design and implement sequential programs of lessons in media studies. The focus will be on media production, children's media culture and media issues/critical readings outside the media studies curriculum.

Preparation for teaching of music in post-primary schools, initially focusing on lesson development, presentation and evaluation. Current issues in class music teaching. Methodologies, content, resources and music education principles such as those of Orff, Kodaly, Schafer and Swanwick. Issues including classroom composition, music technology, mixed ensembles, and strategies for music listening.

EDF5482 Outdoor Education A

This method unit aims to prepare students to teach outdoor education both in the field and in the classroom. The philosophy, history, development and contemporary status of outdoor education will be examined with a focus on the educational, practical preparation of lessons, unit planning and organisation for teaching and trip planning. The curriculum focus of the VCE outdoor education study design, VET sport and recreation certificate II, and the VELS (Victorian Essential Learning Standards) will be examined and relevant curriculum issues will be examined i.e. resources, staffing, gender, equity and timetabling.

EDF5483 Outdoor Education B

This method unit aims to demonstrate how effective outdoor education connects outdoor experiences, conceptual reflection, theoretical and professional development. A range of curriculum and pedagogical issues relevant to the delivery of outdoor education in schools will be examined. This unit includes three days of field programs.

EDF5484 Physical Education A

This unit prepares students to become physical education teachers in secondary schools. Students will be expected to develop an individual philosophy of physical education that reflects their beliefs and values about the subject. The unit will focus on curriculum content and contemporary issues of physical education, as well as knowledge of effective teaching and learning practices. Students will also be encouraged to challenge, reflect and discuss issues on the meanings of physical education in educational, sporting and community settings. Through fieldwork practice, students will be encouraged to apply what has been learnt in class to a school setting.

EDF5485 Physical Education B

This unit builds on the concepts introduced in EDF5484 - Physical Education A. It provides a continuing intellectual, theoretical and practical grounding of secondary physical education enabling students to become critically reflective and informed professionals. Students will study the pedagogies of physical education and examine the complementary partnerships that exist between school physical education and school/community sport. This unit will explore the complex interrelationships between school physical education, physical activity, fitness and the development of healthy lifestyles.

EDF5466 Physics Education A

This unit is designed to prepare students to teach physics in secondary schools and colleges both as a specialist unit at Year 11 and 12 (VCE Physics) and within the junior to middle science curriculum (Years 7 to 10). Attention will be given to the current VCE Physics study design in use in Victorian schools and colleges. The unit concentrates on introducing beginning teachers to a wide variety of teaching strategies, skills and techniques to use in the secondary classroom to aid student conceptual development and understanding. Students studying off-campus may participate in a camp in March.

EDF5467 Physics Education B

This unit builds on the concepts introduced in EDF5466. Students will be introduced to the ideas of "Children's Science" and the importance that students' prior views play in trying to effect conceptual change in the learner during teaching. Attention will be given to investigating ways of developing interesting and effective lessons which incorporate practical demonstrations (POE's - Predict/Observe/Explain), laboratory work and available learning technologies to explore topics within the recommended contexts. A range of current resource material including suitable textbooks, videotapes, computer software, multimedia presentations and visual aides will be evaluated.

In addition, this unit is concerned with an examination of curriculum documents such as the Victorian Essential Learnings and how to use these to develop interesting, engaging and effective lesson plans.

This unit will provide an introduction to teaching and preparation strategies necessary for the secondary teacher of visual arts. Students taking this unit will have expertise in studio practice; ability in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture or ceramics is required. Students will be encouraged to draw upon their knowledge of studio arts to design and implement lessons suitable for a range of levels in the secondary school.

This unit extends the study of teaching strategies introduced in EDF5478. Students will be required to design and implement sequential programs of lessons in the visual arts studio classroom.
