GRAP2371 Strategic Planning 1
This course introduces students to the theory and practice of strategic planning and public relations management as it relates to the modern business sector. This is achieved through learning how to analyse business environments, relevant theories and models in use today and through defining organisations visions, missions and values. Monitoring of public relations programs through escalation will also be covered, along with a practical guide on how to create a budget.

The unit examines the issues and processes associated with international communication. It defines culture and provides insights into significant aspects of intercultural communication. You will gain a broad understanding of culture and the cultural dimensions of communication, both within Australia and internationally. Throughout your studies you will be given significant opportunities to build your understanding and proficiency in intercultural communication.

Develop research knowledge and skills specific to graphic design, fashion or a related industry. You will critically investigate a range of qualitative and quantitative methodologies relevant to these areas of practice. The emphasis will be toward guided independent and group learning, where you will be encouraged to explore and examine research methods and techniques relevant to your own research programs. You will also enhance your skills in information searching, retrieval and collection.

This is a student-negotiated unit within the Master of Design program and is aimed at providing you with the opportunity to explore a topic or issue that is related to both this program of study and your work environment. You will negotiate an area of study, topic, research strategy and outcome focus with their specified academic supervisor.

This project runs over two semesters and the units GRAP2403 and GRAP2404 must be taken consecutively. This project is the major research component of the Master of Design. You will undertake an independent research project or thesis in an area of specific interest. You will work closely with a supervisor to complete the research program and will be expect to present their progress to your peers. The final presentation will be in the form of a written dissertation or visual project.

This unit will introduce you to identity management and the role of the designer in realising and implementing this for the client. You will explore identity management by exploring and questioning, what is identity and who is the audience. You will also look at identity structures, when and why to introduce identity as a resource.

This unit presents you with an in-depth survey of the theory and practices of the design professions. At the completion of this unit students will have been given the opportunity to develop an understanding of the models and systems of design practice, the ethics and law of design practice and the internationalisation of design practice.

Gain an introduction into the research, design and development of market specific products. You will explore topics such as market analysis and developing strategies for introduction to the market. You will also examine the role of product development versus design, the role of product development within the company and market place, analysis of market specifics and niche market analysis. Finally you will also look at implementation strategies for new products within the market and the application of design principles to product development.

Learn about the design industry and the interrelationship of the various design practices. This unit will provide a context in which to place your other studies in this program. You will study the design industry history and development, and its relationship to the community and society. You will also look at individual design practices and their relationship to one another, plus their relationship between business practice, creative and conceptual practice. The unit will also look at the implications of the future of the design industries and the use of digital technology.

Gain an introduction to the importance of design management and quality control issues and the importance they play in the design process. You will begin by identifying the stages in the design process and the development of quality control strategies to ensure smooth delivery. You will look at outsourcing verses in-house, investigation, analysis and strategic recommendations, development, production, delivery and implementation. Beyond this you will examine planning and co-ordination models and assess quality controls by assessing the success of project co-ordination models and quality controls.
