Your chance to make a difference with WorkCover NSW

Visit any WorkCover office and it will not take you long to see the passion and enthusiasm staff have for achieving the common goal of making a difference in workplace safety.

Every member of the WorkCover team has a role to play ensuring the workers of NSW go home safe at the end of each working day. Staff from a range of backgrounds work in partnership with the community to achieve safer workplaces and effective recovery for injured workers.

As part of this commitment to safeguarding workers against accident and injury, WorkCover has the important role of managing theWorkers Compensation Scheme for NSW.

Staff at WorkCover are dedicated to providing the most comprehensive range of workers’ compensation benefits for injured workers in the nation. It is through their initiative and hard work that injured workers are given the valuable opportunity to return to work and get on with life.

Ask Dave Sheerin and Janine Treacy what they like about their jobs with WorkCover NSW and they will tell you it is because they enjoy making their contribution count. One of WorkCover’s Business Advisory Officers at the Newcastle Office, Dave Sheerin, describes the enjoyment he gets from working for an organisation committed to helping others.

“At the end of the day, my job is about preventing workplace incidents, injuries and fatalities. With the practical advice and guidance we provide to business and workers, I know that my contribution makes a difference,” Dave says.

“It’s a good feeling that what I do day-to-day helps others stay safe at work.”

Dave also appreciates that his suggestions and recommendations are valued and acted upon.

“One of the reasons I can do my job so well is that I am able to have an active involvement in decisions that improve the business processes.”

Janine Treacy joined WorkCover more than four years ago as an IT service desk team leader and is now manager of IT operations. She explains that much of her motivation for the job comes from the knowledge that she is working within a dynamic environment that aims for social justice and equitable access to services.

“There is a strong work ethic and a sense of pride in what we do,” Janine says.

“It’s about continuous improvement and giving the best possible service.”

Flexible work practices and a supportive personal development culture all play a role in fostering a positive work environment.

Two years ago Janine had a baby and, after maternity leave, was able to return to work two days a week until she was ready to go back full time. Earlier this year when Janine’s daughter started school, she changed her work hours to accommodate the school run.

“Through flexible work times I am able to meet both my work commitments and my family obligations as a parent,” Janine says.

Many believe that WorkCover is an organisation of safety inspectors, when, instead, it is a thriving workplace of roles as diverse as engineering, IT, accountancy, communications, marketing, HR and customer service. WorkCover offices stretch from the far north coast at Tweed Heads, as far south as Bega, and to the west at Dubbo, Griffith in the Riverina, Albury, Tamworth and Narrabri.

Through WorkCover’s performance development process, staff are continuously encouraged to enhance their skills and participate in training. Talented employees have the opportunity to broaden their expertise through different role and in acting management positions.

WorkCover strives to develop an employment culture that encourages capability and rewards performance. Job satisfaction initiatives include the CEO awards, where staff contributions are recognised, and healthy lifestyle programs. A successful social club also operates in all branches and runs a variety of activities.

Dave and Janine both talk of the vibrancy of their office, the team spirit and the sense of purpose and drive of their co-workers. They join the hundreds of other WorkCover staff who get enormous satisfaction out of knowing their contribution makes for safer, happier, healthier workplaces across the state.
