Who we are
Barwon Health is Victoria's largest regional health service. We provide high quality, safe, people-focussed care to more than 450,000 people in Geelong, along the Surf Coast and South Western Victoria. Barwon Health employs over 5,000 staff and has an annual operating budget in excess of $330 million.

What we do
Health services available through Barwon Health cover the full spectrum from emergency and acute care to mental heath, primary care, community services, aged care and subacute and rehabilitation. We serve a geographically dispersed population through two major sites: Geelong Hospital and the McKellar Centre.

Geelong Hospital has been acknowledged as the 8th busiest hospital in Australia and the third busiest in Victoria. Barwon Health has a total of 921 beds and a total of 31 sites overall stretching down the coast to Anglesea, Torquay and Lorne. We are the largest employer in the Barwon region.

There are Coronary Care and Intensive Care Units, and Barwon Health also provides sub-acute services in Geriatrics, Palliative Care and Rehabilitation Medicine.

With the exception of neurosurgery and transplantation, virtually all other specialties are available at Barwon Health in Geelong.

Specialist services also extend north to Werribee and south to the South Australian border for major specialties such as cancer, cardiology and cardio-thoracic surgery.

Barwon Health is committed to developing a vibrant culture of education for all staff, fostering clinical excellence, effective leadership and a solid foundation of continuous learning.

As part of this commitment, Barwon Health aims to strengthen partnerships with Deakin and Melbourne Universities to maximise opportunities for joint research, support and grants.

We are currently in transition to become the principal teaching hospital for Deakin Medical School.

The Barwon Health Centre for Education and Practice Development provides education for nurses and other staff across Barwon Health, while undergraduate and post graduate medical education and training is offered through the Barwon Health Medical Education Unit.

Allied Health Education within Barwon Health consists of clinical education for students undertaking either undergraduate or post graduate training to obtain the allied health qualification; and ongoing professional development and education for qualified allied health professionals as they work in a wide range of areas within the organisation.

What we research
Through Barwon Health’s Douglas Hocking Research Institute, major programs of research are being undertaken with cord blood stem cells. The University of Melbourne’s Clinical and Biomedical Science also has the internationally recognised Geelong Osteoporosis study. Other research areas include cancer, clinical trials, epidemiology, surgery, cardiology, psychiatry, infectious diseases, orthopaedics and nursing.
