TransGrid’s graduates get real every day
Daniel Burn has been working for TransGrid since he finished his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Power) at Sydney University a year ago. When he goes home each night, he switches his lights on along with thousands of other people across the state.
The only difference is that Daniel helps to make it happen. How many places can you say play a part in a billion dollar investment program?
TransGrid graduates have an important job to do from planning for load growth to finding innovative network solutions and delivering critical assets. Ever coordinated the replacement of a 150-tonne transformer? Ask Daniel - he has first-hand experience.
He’s also been part of a team responsible for emergency repairs and investigations as well as coordinating new connections to the transmission grid. Daniel has the added benefit of working with world-class engineers who will guide and support him throughout his development.
"Almost everything I have learnt at uni has new meaning now that I can apply it at work," Daniel says. "The variety of jobs that TransGrid engineers do is amazing so you really get to see how it fits together. "The people here have so much experience and are really keen to pass on their knowledge. They are genuinely interested in my development."
A program for success
A typical graduate spends about two to three years within the TransGrid Graduate Program after which they are assisted in moving into specialised roles within the organisation.
The Graduate Program is specifically designed to give graduates the skills development they need to fulfil their career aspirations as well as to ensure they are continually challenged and stimulated.
Graduates generally rotate through different areas of the organisation so that they can experience a range of roles and activities, although it’s not unusual to get attached to an area of interest and stay a little longer.
These rotations ensure that TransGrid graduates get to know the business inside out and can play a real role now and into the future.
TransGrid currently has 37 Electrical Engineering Graduates, as well as a number of Civil Engineering Graduates and Accounting Graduates, all at various stages within the program. In fact, the program is really taking shape with 18 new engineering starters in 2008.
With offices throughout greater Sydney and regional NSW, there is plenty of experience on offer.
Graduates can also expect to be exposed to a range of other areas key to their development such as Leadership, Environmental Management, Safety and Project Management.
Planning for your future
